Food tips for hypertension patients

 Hypertension, or high blood pressure, is a common condition that can increase the risk of heart disease and stroke. There are several dietary strategies that can help patients with hypertension in Kathmandu manage their blood pressure and maintain good health:

  1. Limit salt intake: Too much salt can cause an increase in blood pressure. Aim to consume less than 2,300 milligrams of sodium per day, and consider using herbs and spices as flavourings instead of salt.
  2. Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables: Fruits and vegetables are rich in nutrients and low in sodium, making them an excellent choice for people with hypertension. Aim to consume at least five servings of fruits and vegetables per day.
  3. Choose lean proteins: Lean proteins, such as chicken, turkey, fish, and plant-based options, can help lower blood pressure. Avoid processed meats, which are high in sodium and unhealthy fats.
  4. Eat whole grains: Whole grains, such as whole wheat, oats, and quinoa, are rich in fiber and have been shown to help lower blood pressure. Choose whole grain versions of foods, such as whole grain bread and pasta, instead of refined grains.
  5. Include healthy fats: Fats can help regulate blood pressure, but it's important to choose the right types. Opt for monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats, such as olive oil, nuts, and avocados, rather than saturated and trans fats.
  6. Limit alcohol intake: Alcohol can raise blood pressure, so it's important to consume it in moderation. For men, this means no more than two drinks per day, and for women, no more than one drink per day.
  7. Drink plenty of water: Staying hydrated is important for overall health, and it can also help regulate blood pressure. Aim to drink at least eight cups of water per day.
